Breed InformationThe Rottweiler is a medium to large size breed dog, neither heavy nor light and neither leggy nor weedy. The boast a correctly proportioned, compact and powerful build that suggests great strength, manoeuvrability and endurance. They are characterised by a broad head, ears that bend forward, dark eyes, a well-developed muzzle, a strong neck and a powerful and muscular build. SIZE The male Rottweiler will stand stands between 61 - 68 cm in shoulder height and weighs anywhere between 38-49 kg. Rottweilers are quite comfortable in-doors but still require a large yard to roam about as they wish. COAT This dog has a double coat that consists of a topcoat that is short, straight, and coarse and an undercoat that is thick and can be seen around the neck and the thighs. Their coat is black with markings of rich tan. Rottweilers shed moderately. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT The Rottweiler is a loyal, obedient, brave, watchful, and protective dog. They are strong and powerful and will put their life on the line to safeguard and defend their family. If they have been properly socialized from an early age, they will get along well with children, other dogs and other household pets. Rottweilers have an undeserved reputation of being a vicious and mean dog when in actual fact they make an excellent family pet. CARE Excessive bathing of this dog might strip the coat of its natural oils. As such, bathing should be done only when necessary and dry shampooing can be an alternative option. Their coat should be brushed regularly to remove any dead hair. TRAINING Early socialization and obedience training is a must for this dog. They are eager to learn and will excel in different sports and activities. A firm, consistent, and dominant trainer is needed in order to successfully train a Rottweiler. They are excellent guard dogs. ACTIVITY This breed is extremely active and requires an adequate amount of exercise. They enjoy long walks, jogging, running, swimming, and playing catch.
