Breed Information

Pugs are a breed with great charm, dignity and intelligence. They have a short and stocky build, a round head with a flat muzzle, wrinkled brows, dark and round bulging eyes, ears that fold down, and a tail that has a single or double curl.

SIZE

This dog has an average height of 35 cm and an ideal weight of between 6 -8 kg. They will be perfectly happy living in an apartment or town house and do not need a lot of free space for roaming and running around.

COAT

Pugs have a fine, smooth, soft, short and glossy coat, which is neither harsh nor woolly. Pugs have coat colours of either silver, apricot, fawn or black.  They are considered average shedders but they shed all year round.

CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT

Pugs are easy-going, perky, fun, sociable, intelligent and calm. They get along well with children, other dogs, and all sorts of other pets. This lap dog loves being cuddled and spoilt and has a tendency to get jealous if you do not pay them enough attention. Pugs are even tempered, happy and have a very lively disposition.

CARE

Pugs shed often, so the loose coat hair should be removed from time to time by brushing and combing. The facial creases must be cleaned often and if possible a special lotion should be applied. They should not be exposed to extremely hot weather, as this breed has difficulty dissipating heat.

TRAINING

Pugs are eager to learn because of their natural desire to please their masters. When training one, make sure that you use a calm and gentle voice, as they are very sensitive to the tone of voice. They can be stubborn at times, but generally do well in obedience training. It is recommended you use a Harness rather than a collar with Pugs to protect their necks.

ACTIVITY

Pugs require regular exercise to keep their form. Daily walks and allowing them to run and play about the yard is enough exercise for this breed.
