Breed Information

The alert, energetic Wire Fox Terrier is a highly adaptable dog that is well-suited to families, singles and the elderly alike – so long as you can keep up with their enthusiasm and playful nature!

SIZE
The male Fox Terrier should be up to 39cm tall and the females slightly less, both sexes weighing about 8kg. They are perfect for life as an indoor dog, but keep in mind that their exuberance is a lot bigger than their little frame…

COAT
The Wire Fox Terrier has a coat of dense, wiry hair and an undercoat of short, softer hair. They are white with markings of black, tan, or a combination of both. The hair sheds quite heavily.

CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT
Enthusiasm, excitement and exuberance – the Fox Terrier is a barrel of fun that thrives on exercise and chasing anything smaller than themselves – cats included. They make for great companions for children, families and energetic older people who can keep up with their constant curiosity and propensity for digging in the garden.
Their alert nature and ever-ready yap makes the Fox Terrier a natural watchdog, but their barking can get out of control if left untrained or neglected.

CARE
The coat of the Wire Fox Terrier sheds considerably more than you’d expect and should be brushed weekly and bathed when required. You will need to have your Wire Fox Terrier’s coat stripped and trimmed by a professional groomer, otherwise the hair will matt.
Easily bored and naturally destructive, it’s best not to leave your Fox Terrier alone for long periods of time! If they feel neglected, they will let you know by making a lot of noise, tearing up the garden and your favourite shoes.
It’s important to give your Fox Terrier daily stimulating exercise, lots of interaction with other dogs and plenty of regular training sessions.

TRAINING
In order to curb the natural cheeky, boisterous side of your energetic Fox Terrier, it’s essential to begin obedience training at a young age. Establish “house rules” and let them know where they stand in the pack as early as possible – and be consistent about it!
While they are a highly intelligent breed, the Foxie is easily distracted so training must be done with patience and persistence. It’s advisable to include a session of training in your Fox Terrier’s daily routine to establish dominance and reinforce good behaviours.

ACTIVITY
For such a small dog, the Fox Terrier has reasonably high energy levels and exercise requirements. A 30-minute daily walk is a bare minimum, and the Foxie would do well with an active family that enjoys the outdoors. Be warned - if left to become bored, this natural burrower will make a break for escape!
