Breed Information

The noble and loyal Dobermann was originally bred in the 1800s by a tax collector who wanted a dog to protect him while he was on his rounds. Since then, this sleek breed has been widely used for guarding and watchdog duties, but there is a gentle, playful side to the Dobermann that craves affection and wants nothing more than to be part of a family.

SIZE
The male Dobermann should ideally stand at 69cm and the female at 65cm. An athletic, lanky dog, they require plenty of room and access to a decent sized backyard.

COAT
The sleek, smooth coat of the Dobermann comes in black, brown, blue or fawn with markings the colour of rust-red. The hair is short, hard thick and lies close to the body. The coat is very easy to take care of and sheds lightly.

CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT
Bold and alert, the Dobermann has been greatly used as a guard dog. However, this loyal and obedient breed desires to be part of a “pack” and makes for a great family companion. They are playful, active and have been called somewhat “high-maintenance”, but their cheerful companionship makes it well worth the effort.
If you bring a Dobermann into your house as an indoor pet, expect them to make themselves right at home – up on the lounge, even snuggled up beside you in bed!
If introduced to children and other animals while at a young age, they can easily fit into any family dynamic. They are adaptable and simply desire to be part of pack.

CARE
The Dobermann’s low-shedding coat is extremely easy to care for. A daily rub down and an occasional bath is all that it needs. You can keep your Dobermann’s elbows and hocks free of callouses with a daily application of baby oil.
Being incredibly loyal and attached to their family, it’s unadvisable to leave a Dobermann on its own for long. They may become depressed, detached and destructive.
To keep your Dobermann healthy and happy, give them plenty of exercise for both body and mind – lots of interactive play and obedience training will stimulate this breed’s intelligence and keep them smiling.

TRAINING
Because of their natural suspicion of strangers, it’s essential to start obedience training and proper socialization with your Dobermann as early as possible. If you plan on using your Dobermann as a guard dog, it’s important to teach them the difference between friend and foe at a young age.
As a highly intelligent and bright breed, the Dobermann responds well to training and enjoys the mental stimulation of learning new tricks and “house rules”. Motivated by affection and appetite, reward-based training is the key to teaching your Dobermann how to behave.

ACTIVITY
A very high-energy dog, the Dobermann requires a 30 minute run every day along with interactive play and obedience training. If left in the backyard to become bored, they will do their best to escape so make sure you provide plenty of exercise and affection!
