Breed InformationChihuahuas are a small, dainty and compact breed. They are an alert, swift moving little dog with a saucy expression. Chihuahuas make excellent companions for all age groups, but must not be left alone for long periods of time.SIZE Adult Chihuahuas can weigh between 1 – 2.7kgs. You may have come across the expression “Tea Cup Chihuahua” which in fact is not a recognized breed at all. This term is used to suggest the dog is even smaller than usual which can often mean they are the runt of the litter. As with any breed there is broad variation of the size Chihuahuas will grow to. If you have your heart set on a very small Chihuahua it can be a good idea to purchase a puppy no younger than 4 months old, so that you’ll have a better idea of the size your puppy will grow to. However tiny a puppy is at 8 weeks, there is no way to tell how much more they will grow. COAT Smooth Coat Chihuahuas have a soft textured coat which is close and glossy with an undercoat. Chihuahuas can be born any colour or mixture of colours. Although Chihuahuas have an undercoat, they are very susceptible to the cold, and most will enjoy a nice warm jumper in the cold weather. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT Chihuahuas are happy, spirited and intelligent dogs who are neither snappy nor withdrawn. Chihuahuas are a breed who is only truly happy when they are in the company of their owners. Chihuahuas make fantastic watch dogs, and will alert your household of any guests before they’ve even made it to your door. Training your Chihuahua to cease barking once your guest has entered is essential. As a whole Chihuahuas get along well with other pets, but chances are they will assume the role of top dog, regardless of the size of your other dog, or who was there first. CARE Smooth Coat Chihuahuas do not require a great deal of grooming. A quick brush once a week is all that is necessary. Your Chihuahua will shed their Winter Coat once a year, at which point professional grooming is recommended. Your Chihuahua’s nails must also be kept trimmed. Part of caring for your Chihuahua is accepting that this is not an outside dog. Chihuahuas feel the cold and crave company so can not be left outside for long periods of time, including over-night. A nice warm bed preferably in your room (but not essential) must be provided for your Chihuahua. Chihuahuas on average live between 10 – 13 years. Having said this it is not unusual for a Chihuahua to live into their late teens.TRAINING Chihuahuas respond well to training and will be very eager to please their owner. It is very important that your training style remains consistent and is begun from an early age. If you let your Chihuahua puppy sleep on your bed now, you are likely to have a very difficult time putting them to sleep in their own bed in the future. ACTIVITY Chihuahuas can be very energetic at times but do not require a large area to expel their energy. Your living room or a small backyard is enough space for your little friend to play in, however daily walks are still required to provide your Chihuahua with an interesting life and mental stimulation.
