Breed InformationThe Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has been an extremely popular choice of companion since the days of the Royal Courts of England. Charles II was a proud owner of the spaniels, whom travelled along with their doting owner on every trip he made. It is said that the sign " Beware of the Dog” is likely to have originated from the court of Charles II, although rather than warning people of any danger, it was a warning not to tread on the dogs! SIZE The female Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will usually weigh around the 5.4kg mark and stand 30cm or so tall, while the males can weigh up to be 8.5kg with an elegant 33cm tall. COAT The coat of the Cavalier is long. soft and silky, with feathering on the chest, legs and tail. Coat colours include any of the following four options: Blenheim- Rich Chestnut markings well broken up on a Pearly white ground. Cavaliers tend to drop hair all year round. On top of this the coat of the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel will shed twice a year and during this time will be prone to knots and tangles. Regular brushing and up to date grooming is highly recommended. CHARACTER & TEMPERAMENT The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is the perfect family dog. This breed absolutely thrives on human contact and will form a close bond with their owners. Cavaliers are very good with children, and will have no trouble getting along with other household pets. Cavaliers are a friendly, non-aggressive, highly affectionate breed who will no doubt follow you from room to room at home, and do their very best to take a spot at the end of your bed at night. This is a breed who requires large amounts of attention and affection, and who will not be happy being left a lone for long period of time. CARE Cavalier King Charles Spaniels are very easy to maintain. All that the coat requires to remain shiny and tangle free is a brush or comb twice a week, along with the occasional bath. You will find that bath time is actually quite a pampering session for your Cavalier, as they thoroughly enjoy the attention, and the drying which follows. TRAINING Cavalier King Charles Spaniels respond very well to positive training. Once trained they will remain obedient, however their road sense is poor and unfortunately this is not something which can be taught. For this reason it is essential your yard is securely fenced when owning a Cavalier. Cavaliers are known to dig while young, and will most certainly find a way out of the yard if there is one. ACTIVITY Cavaliers do not need a great deal of exercise and are active enough to keep themselves reasonably fit in a small back yard. Regular walks are highly recommended, your Cavalier will very quickly learn what it means when you pick up the leash before the walk.
